So now that the mass media and the Bush administration are celebrating the so-called relief efforts that have trickled into the Katrina-affected areas of the U.S., let’s look at what is really going on over there. Common Dreams has a very thorough study of the situation as it stands. As we know, former FEMA head Michael Brown is singing like a bird now that he’s been abandoned by Bush and it’s too bad the media isn’t picking up on his admission of lying to protect the President. This partial transcript is great:

O’DONNELL: You have recently given an interview to Playboy Magazine, in which you admitted that it was a mistake for you to play along with the White House message during Katrina and you said that that message was a lie. What was the lie?

BROWN: The lie was that we were working as a team and that everything was working smoothly. And how we could go out, and I beat myself up almost daily for allowing this to have happened, to sit there and go on television and talk about how things are working well, when you know they are not behind the scenes, is just wrong.

O’DONNELL: So let me get this clear. Someone in the White House was telling you to lie?

BROWN: Well, yes. They give you the talking points. Whenever you go out to do any interviews they always have the talking points. Here’s what the message for today is and here’s how we are going to spin everything. That’s just the way Washington, D.C. works and that’s just wrong.

O’DONNELL: Do you work for the White House or do you work for the American people?

BROWN: Exactly I worked for the American people.

O’DONNELL: Then why did you lie? If you say that they told you to lie, why did you carry that out?

BROWN: Norah, that’s exactly why I think that’s the biggest mistake that I made, was not leveling with the American people and saying, you know what, this is a catastrophic event and it’s not working at the state, local or the federal level.

Wow. Crooks and Liars has some analysis of the interview. So, back to the state of the nation one year after Hurricane Katrina. Many people know things are not okay and thankfully let others hear it. The very eloquent and hard-hitting Greg Palast lets us know about a LinkTV video marking the anniversary of the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

As someone who has observed history and seen the patterns of warfare and politics, he was able to spot a mistake waiting to happen, as most Democrats and Progressives have been confirming long ago. In an article from the Daily Kos Hagel notes that many high-level military officials are livid at the prospect of increasing troop levels at this point. Remember when Bush said “…As they [Iraqis] step up, we will step down”? Well, most Americans don’t (or don’t care), but the point is it’s been more than three years that we’ve dumped billions of dollars into this conflict (like Vietnam) and tens of thousands of Iraqis have been killed so far (like Vietnam) and thousands of American/international soldiers are dead (like Vietnam) and people are asking “Are we winning yet?” (like Vietnam).

A lot of the text brings out the fact that most Bush apologists really don’t like independent thinkers, intellectuals… y’know… smart people. Progressives like us are evil because we actually try to figure things out, ask questions, and try to come to conclusions using logic and common sense. Bushies depend on ignorance and following talking-points. They don’t want you to think for yourself. You’re supposed to trust Big Brother without question and get all of your daily information from Fox News (and nothing else).

Our friends at the Daily Kos have once again compiled a great number of details about the illegal spy program implemented on ordinary Americans. They have a wonderful article which debunks many of the fallacies that may persist in some people’s minds which lead them to dismiss the Bush-ordered program as a non-issue.

America, don’t be fooled! Remember, this is the land of the free, not a locked-down prison camp. I suppose everyone won’t mind when we’ll have to get barcodes embedded on the back of our necks, gas will be $5.00/gallon, blogs and forums will be illegal in public buildings, and disagreeing with any Presidential opinion will get you locked up in a foreign prison with no chance to speak with a lawyer. So what happens if Al Qaeda operatives decide to just randomly ring the phone of thousands of ordinary American citizens… or even politicians? Will the black helicopters suddenly appear and whisk these innocent people off to Guantanamo bay with no warrants? How will you deny that you’re not a terrorist? You won’t get a chance, unfortunately… be very afraid.

Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. — Benjamin Franklin

Most of us now know that Scott McClellan, the beleaguered White House mouthpiece, has resigned. For what reason we don’t know yet, but it’s safe to say that for most people, lying for a living takes a hard toll on one’s soul. Maybe now that he’s a free man he will write a book about his experience being the public question-dodger. One can only hope that he’ll come clean about everything, like most who have left the administration… unless, of course, he gets arrested for a crime or ethics violation, which seems common among this new breed of Republicans.

Enter Tony Snow. Yes, Bush doesn’t surprise anyone by choosing a commentator from a Republican-backed propaganda network as its new press secretary. Who else to continue to block the truth from the news media than someone who has spent a career spewing everything but the truth?

To be fair, Bush acknowledged that Snow has been somewhat critical of him lately but come on… All Snow was angry about was Bush’s apparent lack of ferocity in crushing any and all opposition and dissent. Snow and Bush are lock and step when it comes to the talking points and don’t believe that anything will change for the better with respect to press conferences. In fact, I bet you will find that it will be exponentially more difficult to get real, relevant truths from the White House from now on.

Who knows, maybe now we’ll see 24-hour coverage of the situation in Aruba and daily updates of American Idol contestant profiles. I have a feeling that, come election day (2006 mid term), Fox will schedule an American Idol marathon on TV which will have the expected effect of keeping millions of voters home instead of out at the polls.
