Republican Senator: Iraq “an absolute replay of Vietnam”
August 1st, 2006
It’s about time one of these guys came to their senses and actually looked at the overall picture of the situation in Iraq. Senator Chuck Hagel, who by the way is a Vietnam combat veteran, could not hold on to the popular neoconservative illusion any longer and had to speak the truth. As someone who has observed history and seen the patterns of warfare and politics, he was able to spot a mistake waiting to happen, as most Democrats and Progressives have been confirming long ago. In an article from the Daily Kos Hagel notes that many high-level military officials are livid at the prospect of increasing troop levels at this point. Remember when Bush said “…As they [Iraqis] step up, we will step down”? Well, most Americans don’t (or don’t care), but the point is it’s been more than three years that we’ve dumped billions of dollars into this conflict (like Vietnam) and tens of thousands of Iraqis have been killed so far (like Vietnam) and thousands of American/international soldiers are dead (like Vietnam) and people are asking “Are we winning yet?” (like Vietnam).
